Oh, it's been a busy past few weeks around my parts again, and I am just (kind of) going on auto-pilot until Sunday morning rolls around. Sunday morning is caramel-roll-time! And puppy-time. And Vince Guaraldi-time, presents-time, and staying in our jammies ALL DAY TIME YES.
I am playing catch up again with some outfits here, so let's get to it. Colorado finally got a hard blast of winter this week, but before that it was warm enough to be outside sans jacket. Colorado, in fact, is the only place I know where you can often see people shoveling snow while only wearing t-shirts.
(And sitting in their cars for 72 hours up I-70 in December just to go skiing.)
I digress. One of my favorite parts of the holidays is having friends & family in town, and I picked up the skirt that I am wearing below for $10 at Forever 21 during one of our many Christmas Gift Shopping Expeditions.
I will admit that when I first saw neon colors popping up on the runways and in magazines I gave them a hearty roll of my eyeballs, but I think when done in carefully measured doses they can actually be...fun? Maybe not a let's-keep-our-lipglosses-in-our-purses-while-going-through-airport-security-to-see-if-they-find-them-cuz-they-never-do! sort of fun, but more of a let's-go-to-Disney-Land-and-take-pictures-of-us-high-fiving-Chip-and-Dale-because-everyone-always-forgets-about-them sort of fun. Right? Exactly.
So what is the best way to wear eyeball-burningly-bright pieces? Neon pieces, I feel, are best paired with neutral hues. Think camel, grays, taupes, olives, and rusts--they really let brighter colors pop.
I am also tightless in the outfit below mostly because I hate wearing them; I've always been okay with being bare-legged. It must be my hearty south-dakotan-lefse-and-butter-fueled-blood. Delicious.
Ta ta ta:
I also picked up
this little beaded pouch from Urban Outfitters last week, and while I am using it as a pseudo gift bag for a Christmas gift, it's a
fantastic little bag for only $50. It also proves that pretty handbags don't always need to cost thousands, right?
When going cheap I stay away from faux leather handbags, as they almost always look slightly fake and plastic-y, but since fabric bags lack that element they can oftentimes look a lot more expensive than they actually are. This little bag even has iridescent sequins that give it a bit of shimmer without being over-the-top sparkly, woo hoo hoo:

I felt the same about neon, but then I saw a Christopher Kane outfit on pinterest and was hooked, though not much has made its way into my wardrobe yet. I definitely support your neon + neutral stance (the CKane outfit was a neon-pink pleated skirt with a hi-low hem paired with a gray sweater) and love that coat with it, too! (There is an ON next to my grocery store, so I am in there more than I'd like to admit. I almost bought that coat, but the XS was sold out...boo hoo).
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your time with family and your pj's ;) Merry Christmas!
LOVE the neon yellow skirt! i need to get some color in my winter wardrobe asap :)

You pulled off the neon well!! I love it with the "rust" family! :)
ReplyDeleteI do not own any neon...but I have been lusting for the J. Crew vintage cotton v-neck in a bright pink. It is no longer available online, but still at my local store. I should just get it! :p
Hope you have a nice Christmas! :)
I totally agree with you about pairing neon with neutrals...it's the best way to ease into the trend. I have begun by incorporating neon accents into outfits (like a bright clutch, belt or necklace). Love this skirt! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your pairing of a rustic brown/orange with a bright colored skirt! Happy Holidays Chloe! ;)

I really do love neons, although I haven't ventured past wearing them on my fingers and toes ;)
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe that coat is from Old Navy - so chic! Merry Christmas Chloe!
The neon yellow looks great the way you paired it. And that little beaded pouch is too cute. Merry Christmas!

That skirt is just fabulous!! I'm all for neons and brights, even in the winter. I just did a blog post the other day with me wearing a neon pink sweater. I'm hoping to add more with some jeans next.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty I love neons but I'm terrified to wear them. Also, The crazies shoveling in their t-shirts? We have those in Minnesota too. Although here I've seen more of a shorts-and-hoodie combo.
ReplyDeleteps. lefseeee yum!!!
yay, bring on the neon!
ReplyDeleteLove neon colors! That skirt is the perfect way to add neon to an outfit.
ReplyDeleteyes, neon nail polish, neon accessories…
ReplyDeletelove the skirt, love your blog!

I had a pale yellow gingham blazer from Gap circa a 100 years ago that I got on stoopid clearance for $4.99 or something and never wore because it doesn't matter if pale yellow gingham is $4.99, I still don't wear pale yellow gingham. When will I learn?
ReplyDeleteBut! Then all the bloggers started dyeing their clothes funny colors and I thought, hey, I can dye this blazer neon yellow and maybe wear it over that khaki colored silk shift dress I got from Banana Republic on stoopid clearance and also never wore... and ya know what? They work together.
Shit blows my miiiiiind.
