Why do you love fashion blogging?
And I do agree. The farther I go along with this, the more ballsy I have become with experimenting with my own style, and so I realize that my sense of style and some of the pieces that I wear might not exactly be do-able for a lot of women out there.
Oh, it would be incredibly boring. But that being said, there are still ways to be inspired even if the exact items found on fashion blogs aren't always practical for every single woman in this world. Here are my two biggest tips:
1. Look for inspiration in unlikely places. I find inspiration for my outfits all over the place: from fellow bloggers, Pinterest, magazines, TV shows, paintings, photographs, catalogs--whatever! Charming mixtures of colors, shapes, patterns, and textures can be found everywhere in this big, wild world; you just have to look at things the right way.
2. It's okay to play with and swap items; accessories are the easiest to switch around! For example, I might replace leopard heels with a leopard belt, or swap a neon-hued bag for a bangle. The idea is to use things that you already have in your closet and feel comfortable wearing to replicate an outfit you like, and there are easily a gazillion different ways to do it. It also gives the copied/inspired outfit a touch of your own style, too.
These tips might take a little bit of creativity and an extra 10 minutes in the closet, but the more you do it the easier it gets. Promise.

Chloe, Colorful Colorado. 5'8" (only) when teetering in her highest 6 inch Miu Miu platform heels. Likes fashion, broccoli, ice cream, clarifying that she does not eat ice cream with her broccoli as to not cause worldwide panic, hoarding beauty products & pretty shoes, tickle fights with her husband (he would like to clarify that he does not like them back, OKAY?), anything covered in sprinkles, any alcoholic beverage made with Tang, live music, clicking the camera, sarcasm fonts, vases stuffed full of pretty flowers, and laughing hard until her belly hurts. Wants an adventurous life, lots of puppies, to never obtusely wander around with her fly down, and to be an iconic Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress with a bright, festive print when she grows up. This is where she bravely documents it all. (
I guess in some cases fashion bloggers are not easy to relate too, but it just depends. People have different ideas of what's dressy or not. For me, I'm a mom to a three year old and I don't have the need to put on a skirt, though sometimes I wish I did, but it just doesn't make sense for me right now. However, I do try to come up with different mommy-on-the-go outfits, 'cause for me, sweats outside of the house or gym is not acceptable. Plus, location has something to do with my situation too. I live in a small town and casual is king here! I would really love to dress up on the evenings I do go out, but if I did I would feel like the queen of England compared to everyone else. I guess in those cases I really shouldn't care what everyone else is wearing, but I do, 'cause I want to fit in somewhat. BUT I really do appreciate fashion and love seeing how different women in different parts of the country work their wardrobe. So carry on, carry on! And i love this new idea of showing slight variations of different outfits.
ReplyDeleteI looove the idea of showing an outfit in different ways especially since some of us have a way safer/boring comfort zone to get out of--baby steps, people.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
I loved reading this Chloe. I follow all of the girls you mentioned and completely agree that they are tremendous sources of inspiration. I do think that sometimes fashion bloggers can come across as a little uppity (is that a word?) If a girl is decked out head to toe in high end designers, if everything she is wearing comes "courtesy of" a company, if you know she lives in an area where it's freezing balls and yet she's got on a really extravagant outfit and she's OUTSIDE, then I have to wonder if she is being real with us. However, I love fashion because it is all inpirational to me. It truly is an art, and who am I to question what another girl wears? I love it all! Even if it doesn't suit my tastes, or even if there is no way in hell I could afford her clothes, it's still inspiration. I started beauty and fashion blogging over two years ago, and I know that being part of this community has changed my wardrobe and my confidence in a positive way. I love blogging! And I'm happy others do too :)
ReplyDeleteI would definitely wear this at the office. Adorable <3 :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE your YSL arty ring!!<3

Best post of the day! love to see your looks, always so inspiring :) keep it going! :) *
ReplyDeleteI love this new series, Chloe! It's so great to see all your different combinations. For me, fashion blogging really has meant experimenting with styles I never would have thought and trying out things I see on other bloggers. There is so much inspiration out there!

I agree...it is so fun to have "met" so many people from all over. I associate cities/states with bloggers now! Or if I am out shopping I will say something like "That is Elle's shirt" and my husband knows it is an online friend...sometimes he even knows exactly who I am talking about.
ReplyDeleteTo the outfits...that skirt is such a lovely color on you! I regret not picking up that J. Crew belt!
I am looking forward to more "five ways" posts!
I love this post and how is shows you can wear pieces in sooo many different ways! <3 you Chloe!

I love blogging and totally agree about having met so many fabulous people through it. Also, there are tons of bloggers out there whose style I love even if it's different from mine but there is still plenty of inspiration. For example, I could never pull of the skirt you are wearing (I'm 5'9") but I love the way you accessorized it differently particulary with the pops of color from the belts.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for this feature! My favorite part of blogging is drawing inspiration from so many talented ladies out there...and love all of the people I have met!
ReplyDeletethankyou for the shout out Chloe :) Your blog is one of the first that every inspired me to start wearing color (I, andmy readers thank you!)
ReplyDeletegreat tips on how to find your style...I find myself evolving so much with my own...it's a process! I also love Pinterest---especially love the home decor stuff!
PS---I still die a little inside when I see the yellow pointy toed pumps. I want to marry them.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the shout out Chloe. I must say that without your encouragement and support I probably wouldn't have created a blog of my own. I love that we 'met' about three years ago because of our love of chihuahuas and fashion. Thank you for being such a great inspiration for all of us. And I love this new series and I need that fedora....
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit variations you have been doing! And I feel that even if an outfit you post pushed the envelope and a reader can't relate to it in it's entirety, there is probably a color-combo or way you've layered something that could spark some interest and creativity. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI love those last shoes! The Mona ones. That colour is to diiiiiiie for. I wish I could get them!
ReplyDeleteI love that you come up with different ways of styling clothes. You are great at accessorizing. :)
What a fabulous skirt! I love how you've styled it! And I have the opposite height problem... designers don't seem to make anything long enough for me! Oh the things we go through for fashion...
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! These are great looks, and that skirt looks fabulous on you. You've got an amazing wardrobe, and you're really good and mixing and matching it up -- I think it's more important to be able to see a blogger work with what she's got than relate to the actual pieces she's working with. It gives me ideas about how I can re-work what's in my closet to create totally new looks.
ReplyDeleteI actually posted something similar last weekend -- I styled a sequin skirt 10 ways. It's here http://thecoastalchicster.blogspot.com/2011/11/one-piece-endless-possibilities-sequin.html if you wanna check it out. =)
yes, yes and Yes!!
ReplyDeleteSome times it's a hit or miss with coordinating an outfit, but clothes are fun and people should experiment with anything they may already have laying around.
I'm so glad you posted 5 diff. options with multiple colors all in very opposite ends of the spectrum, it really opens up to see that with fashion "anything goes". Great job Mrs. Guacamole!

AMAZING! I love the way the belts just change everything! :)

LOVE this new series, I look forward to your oufit posts everyday!
ReplyDeleteI think I agree with a previous commentor that some bloggers can seem more unapproachable or "uppity" but one reason why yours is one of my fave blogs is because you do seem approachable & down-to-earth. I like when I see items repeated in your outfits because that really shows us how you can work with what you've got and not have to shop every single day. In the real world you have to be able to wear pieces more than once so why should your blog project anything else?
Thanks for being such a huge inspiration!
xoxo

I like reading style blogs b/c it's essentially really fancy people-watching, and people-watching is one of my hobbies. I read your blog specifically b/c you're just so stinkin' cute! Plus, you're amazing at accessorizing and that is a skill I lack.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I love all of these looks! Next time you clean out your closet I'd be happy to come over and help! Haha.
ReplyDeleteRebeccawithanR
Love, love, love, that black cherry top with the terracotta skirt! So pretyt.
ReplyDeleteI used to feel that fashion blogs weren't relatable particularly in the context of blogs like The Sartorialist -- I mean, a lot of those men and women are coming out of Paris fashion week shows and so on. I always loved seeing them, but it took me a while to see them as relevant to me. The fact is, though, that there are always concepts that you can take away -- polka dots with stripes, oxfords with a flouncy skirt. I'm unlikely to really replicate any of what I see but I get terrific ideas from it all the time. It's all about inspiration!
Thank you so much for the shout out - you're one of the reasons why I started blogging! Love all of your styling options for this piece and looking forward to this series! <3
ReplyDeleteWhat a great skirt! I think #2 is my favorite but it's hard b/c I like them all so much!
